More Info - Classic Reebok Trainers
There have been several Reebok trainers of note over the years, and we thought it would be a good idea to take a trip down memory lane and have a quick round up of the 'classics'. Now I'm not sure if these will be on everyone's list, but before we go any further a bit of personal input is required, and to that end I believe that mention must be paid first of all - and it is my website! - to the cross trainer
The Cross Trainer
Launched in the 1980s this model has poignant memories for me. I first got involved in martial arts in Tooting, London when I joined a southern style Mantis kung Fu club. Being young as I was I took the Sifu's lead and purchased black Reebok cross trainers, as did pretty much the rest of the class. They looked good, and they had to be black to match the rest of our attire. They were good days, and apart from the comfort and manoeuvrability, they get to the top of my list for mainly sentimental reasons.
In more recent times, although I didn't develop into Bruce Lee, I have attended various classes, of different styles and bare feet have been de rigour, or les chassuers du jour, the one exception being a class in Santa Rosa where despite the roughness of the body conditioning trainers were again the norm.
The Classic
Launched in 1987, the style was nothing outstanding, it was more of an attempt (quite successful), at providing a trainer that had practical and social values, and as such it has been referenced several times by among others, Babyshambles. It looks like a running shoe almost, but remains a trainer due to the lack of elevation. Classics are a brand of training shoe made by Reebok.
With leather uppers though, this was always going to be more of a fashion choice trainer, than an athletic one, as the materials used in their construction did not have the breathability of other makes and model. Having said that, it remains a firm favorite with many.
The Pump
The Reebok Pump trainers was without doubt an absolute stroke of genius. Ok, so it did not give you superhuman leaping powers, but it gave you that extra few inches of lift. And, you pumped it yourself which gave you more of a connection with the trainer, almost like a pet if you didn't give it the attention it would let you down - literally
Pretty much a culturally iconoclastic trainer, we are sure at the time of writing that there must have been some comedy sketches based around the pump, so if you know of any, please let us know, and we'll stick the video up.
Time for a break, but, more classic Reebok trainers to follow, and if you have you personal favourite, please let us know and we'll do our best to accommodate you.
